The faux indigenous person story may simply be a matter of opportunism (see Elizabeth Warren), in which case we're just talking about a con artist pulling a scam, but it may be more twisted than that, as in someone assuming a false identity to feel better about himself. It's happened before and will happen again, not least because of the current sociopolitical climate, which is hardly healthy.
