Oh, American theater's problem is not gentleness but weakness, an enervating and self-defeating attempt to reflect a world that does not exist but theoretically should, according to certain au courant views. Of course, all sorts of views now rejected were once au courant and also aggressively promoted (and enforced) by all sorts of would-be Illuminati. Alas, delusion (and worse) is always with us.

"Toxic gentleness" is a compelling term, in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with gentleness, of course, but it's being pursued to the point of cruelty. Compare it to my characterization as Excess Yin. https://dissidentmuse.substack.com/p/diversity-as-excess-yin

I rather doubt gentleness as such is the point of what Fox addresses, though it may be called that. I expect the point is to be "correct" and in sync with the currently fashionable would-be verities, and to demonstrate that (not to say flaunt it). And it is not just a matter of weakness but a matter of fear, since what is wanted and expected is conformity, not true diversity.
