Yes, Botero had a shtick, and then some. Makes no difference what he meant to do with it--intentions as such guarantee nothing, and the proof is always in the pudding. Botero pudding is like baby food and a one-trick pony. He found an audience, but I'm not part of it. Maybe it's a "Latin" thing.
The paintings quickly become tiresome and eventually embarrassing. The sculptures come off better, initially, partly due to scale and mass effects and the sober respectability of bronze...until they all start to look like variations on the same trick.
