The whole ethos is pathological, as in diseased, but as long as it serves the afflicted well enough, they will keep at it.

Well, yes, same as government bureaucrats who protect their jobs by voting for those least likely to reduce bureaucracy. They sure wouldn't vote for someone like Argentina's Milei.
